LAHORE: The historic Khairpur district, which flashed headlines on Saturday by witnessing country’s worst local bodies election-related violence that claimed at least 11 lives, has often been in mainstream media for wrong reasons.
In June 1963, not fewer than 116 Shia Muslims participants of a Moharram procession were killed here—one of the worst-ever sectarian incidents of its kind till date. In July 2015, as many as 25 passengers were injured in road accident near Khairpur. Khairpur was also in the news in March 2015 when some 14 people, including women, were killed here in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck.
Earlier in November 2011, at least 60 people, including 10 children, were killed in a collision between a passenger bus and truck at the Theri Bypass on the National Highway near Khairpur. The Karachi-bound passenger bus travelling from Swat was completely destroyed in this tragic accident.
Once a princely state ruled by the Talpur Mirs from 1783 to 1955, Khairpur is also the hometown of incumbent Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, another former provincial Chief Executive Syed Ghous Ali Shah, an 18th Century Sufi poet Sachal Sarmast (1739 - 1829) and the late Syed Shah Mardan Shah Pagaro (1928-2012)’s eldest son and the eighth Pir Pagaro Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi III (born 1956) etc.
