Call to appoint army at polling stations

GUJRANWALA: Several intending candidates for chairman seats in various union councils have demanded the District Returning Officer (DRO) Rafaqat Ali appoint army in their UCs during the Local Government polls.
In their written applications, the candidates belonging to different political parties said that the PML-N could use government machinery for winning the LG polls. They demanded the DRO deploy the army at different polling stations to avoid any untoward incident.
KILLER GETS DEATH: Additional Sessions Judge Iram Ayaz on Tuesday awarded death sentence to a man in a murder case.
According to prosecution, Nawaz had gunned down Abu Bakar over some issue on April 25, 2012. The court awarded life imprisonment to co-accused Shakeel and Khurram in the same case. Meanwhile, Additional Sessions Judge Syed Faizul Hassan awarded life term and Rs 200,000 fine each to Asghar, Karamat and Shahzad in a case. The convicts had murdered a woman at Noshera Virkan on Aug 9, 2010.
2 HELD FOR RUNNING ILLEGAL MONEY EXCHANGE BUSINESS: FIA Assistant Director Muhammad Sarwar on Tuesday arrested two people on the charge of running illegal money exchange business.
The FIA team raided at Kunjah and arrested Sajjad Ahmad and Khalid Farooq for running illegal money exchange business. The team also recovered 820 Euro, 2,200 Saudi Riyal and thousands of Pakistani rupees. A case has been registered against the accused persons. Meanwhile, an FIA team raided at a Nadra office and arrested Akram Butt for receiving money from the people for doing work. In another raid at passport office, the FIA arrested five agents, Ashraf, Shafaqat, Munir, Iqbal and Tanvir, and recovered various CNICs and tokens from them. Separate cases have been registered against the accused persons.
FUNERAL PRAYERS IN ABSENTIA FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS: The judicial officers, lawyers and civil society members on Tuesday offered funeral prayers in absentia for earthquake victims at the Judicial Complex. The DBA also observed a strike to show solidarity with the families of the victims.
