Crime at ‘alarming level’ in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA: Crime ratio has reached an ‘alarming level’ in Gujranwala, especially in Civil Lines police circle.
The people, including traders, are being looted in broad daylight and deprived of cash, mobile phones, motorcycles and other valuables. The rising crime has increased a sense of insecurity and dampened the trade activities.
Several gambling dens and Quba Khanas have been set up in Civil Lines, Aroop, Jinnah Road, Sadr, People’s Colony, Cantt and other police stations limits. Gangs of youngsters are active in snatching mobile phones from couples in city streets and markets while drugs are also being sold openly.
People are of the view that the crime is on the rise in the city as the police are allegedly not taking action against the criminals. The people have demanded the police high-ups take action against those police officers, who are not taking steps to control the crime in their areas.
When contacted, CPO’s PRO Gulrez said that the police were making every possible effort to control the crime. He said that the police had busted several gangs of dacoits. He said that a crackdown on drug pushers and illegal weapon holders was going on successfully in the district. He said that the crime rate was not alarming. He said: “Our struggle to decrease the crime rate in Gujranwala city will continue and criminals will be dealt with iron hands.”
