FAISALABAD: Two condemned prisoners were hanged in the Central Jail here on Thursday.
They are Muhammad Akhlaq and his relative Shaukat Ali. They had gunned down their cousins Tariq Javed and Zafar Iqbal on the premises of the sessions court on February 2, 2001. Police had submitted their challan in an anti-terrorism court and the then ATC judge Ikramul Haq had awarded them death on four counts. Their appeals against the conviction were rejected by the high court and the apex court. The president had also turned down their mercy appeal. Later, Anti-Terrorism Court Special Judge Raja Pervez Akhtar fixed September 11 as their execution date but they got an interim stay order from the high court and their execution was deferred. After vacation of the stay, the ATC judge had fixed October 1 for their execution.
Meanwhile, the jail authorities arranged the last meeting of the prisoners with their family members on Wednesday night. During the meeting, the convicts were found repenting for killing their cousins.
