Health minister inaugurates breast cancer ward at SIUT

Sindh health minister Dr Azra Pechuho on Monday inaugurated a breast cancer ward at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

She said it was “another milestone in providing quality health services to the people of Sindh”, especially women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in the province.

Speaking on the occasion, the health minister lauded the services which the SIUT is providing to the society at large for over past four decades. She said SIUT director Dr Adib Rizvi was an iconic personality.

The minister said the statistics of breast cancer patients “in our society is an eye opener”. She assured that all steps would be taken to provide relief to the patients.

The health minister was informed that the ailment of breast cancer was posing a great threat to females as according to an estimate one approximately in nine women suffers with the ailment in Pakistan. The rate of prevalence for breast cancers in Pakistan happens to be one of the highest among other Asia countries

In this backdrop, the health minister was told that the SIUT took the initiative and set up a unit in 2017 with an aim to provide multidisciplinary services and extend treatment to all patients.

“The SIUT now plans to enhance its activities by increasing the number of outdoor patients’ facilities besides performing surgeries and carrying out radiology and pathology .The department is also enhancing genetically testing in the days to come,” the minister was told.

Earlier, Prof Adib Rizvi in his address talk about the transformation and achievements of the SIUT during past four decades.

Dr Bushra Sheerazi, in charge of the newly-established ward, gave a detailed presentation about the phenomenon of breast cancer. The minister was accompanied by the director and other faculty staff members visited various sections of the ward.
