KARACHI: Lahore’s Numan Ilyas carded an impressive 72 to take a surprise two-shot lead on the second day of Faldo Series Pakistan here at the Defence Authority Country and Golf Club on Friday.

While the top two aspirants in the Under-21 category – Karachi’s Vivek Anand and Rawalpindi’s Ralfe’e Raja – struggled in windy conditions, the big-hitting Numan was in his element as he finished with a par round for a two-day aggregate of 147 (+3). He is now the overall leader in the tournament being organised by the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) to select the Pakistan team for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Finals to be held in Vietnam in March this year.

Placed on the second spot in the boys under-21 category was first day’s joint leader Vivek, who carded 77 for an aggregate of 149. Placed on the third spot in the category is M Arsalan (150) while Ralfe’e Raja has slipped to fourth (152) with a second round score of 80.

In the boys under-18 category, Lahore’s Damil Ataullah continued to take the first spot after carding 76 for an aggregate of 151 (+7). But DHA’s Ali Mehmood is just two shots behind him. Ali carded 75 for an aggregate of 153. He is followed by Junaid Irfan in third place with 154. In this category, the best score of the day came from the big-hitting Hazma Zahid Khan who carded 74 which was a big improvement after his first round score of 81.

In the boys under-16 category, DHA’s Omar Khalid built up a four-shot lead after carding an impressive 75. Omar, a grade 10 student of Froebel Education Centre, had one birdie and four bogies in his round. He now has an aggregate of 153 (+9). In the second place was the duo of Yashal Shah and Nadir Khan. Yashal shot 80 while Nadir carded a superb round of 75. Behind them were Danyal Khan (162) and Sameer Sayeed (165).

In the girls’ under-21 category, Amna Amjad showed some fight by carding 82 but Aanya Farooq was still leading by 19 strokes despite her 81.

In the girls’ under-16 category, national champion Hamna Amjad was holding to her one shot advantage after carding 77 for an aggregate of 155. Daniah Syed, however, has put her under pressure by carding 75. The third player in this category, Abiha Hanim Syed, scored 84.

The Pakistan leg of the Faldo Series will serve as national trials for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Finals to be held at the Laguna Lang Co Golf Club in Danang, Vietnam from March 4-6.
