The extremely cold weather has caused a dramatic increase in many illnesses. One of the most dangerous is pneumonia, especially for children. Already there are reports of an uptake in pneumonia patients in hospitals. Pneumonia not only requires intense treatment but also has a long recovery period. To help recovery of patients, in particular children, it was found that blowing air through a straw to make bubbles in a bottle of water helps reduce the recovery period.
This practice is not followed in Pakistan and does not require any special equipment. The bottle and straw can be made from used plastic bottles. The provincial health ministers should issue special instructions to hospitals to include such treatment for pneumonia. Furthermore, posters should also be installed in all hospitals about this treatment, to spread awareness among patients.
