Taxi driver shot dead on resistance in Gujranwala
GUJRANWALA: A taxi driver was shot dead on resistance at Wazirabad on Monday. Anjum Rasheed was on his way by his taxi when armed men intercepted him near Kathor Kalan and snatched the vehicle from him. They shot him dead when he offered resistance. Wazirabad police have started investigation.
‘MEASURES TO BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES OF PEOPLE’: Commissioner Zahid Akhtar Zaman and RPO Tariq Abbas Qureshi have said that all possible measures will be taken for protection of lives and properties of the people.
They expressed these views during a high level video link meeting held to review law and order situation in the chair of Punjab Law Minister Muhammad Basharat Raja here on Monday. The commissioner and the RPO said that the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan guarantees equal rights to all of its citizens irrespective of religious belief. They said that foolproof security would be ensured for the Sikh Yatrees visiting their sacred places in the Gujranwala division, including Kartarpur. They said that all possible resources would be utilised for the security of the Sikh community living in the division and visiting their historical, religious and sacred places. They said that any attempt to disrupt the peace and tranquility prevailing in the division would be dealt with iron hands. The Punjab minister, the Punjab IGP and the additional chief secretary (Home) sensitised the participants regarding security threats and asked the participants to take immediate steps for the provision of maximum possible security to the Sikh community.
‘PHA PLANTED 150,000 SAPLINGS IN 2019’: The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Gujranwala planted 150,000 saplings in 2019 and a target of 200,000 has been fixed for the year 2020. It was said by PHA Chairman SA Hameed in a meeting with Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed at his office here on Monday. The minister directed the PHA to adopt comprehensive steps to achieve the goals of tree plantation campaign.
The Gujranwala district was a part of Clean and Green Programme to curb pollution and reduce the drastic effects of climate change, he added. During the meeting, the arrangements for the tree plantation drive in Gujranwala were reviewed in details. The minister directed to complete arrangements for the Jashn-e-Baharan timely to provide healthy recreational facilities to the people. He instructed that special focus should be given to maintain the cleanliness of parks and green belts in the city as a clean environment plays an important role in healthy living.
