Jaggery units raided in Charsadda
PESHAWAR: Acting on public complaints about the use of harmful chemicals in the preparation of jaggery (gur), the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Authority in collaboration with the district administration Charsadda on Sunday raided gur-making units in the district.
A press release said a team of the authority led by its director-general Suhail Khan conducted the raids on the instructions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan.
The handout quoting the chief minister said that action against the owners of the gur-making units that were involved in the preparation of substandard gur by using harmful chemicals would continue.
Director operations of the authority, Dr Azmat Wazir, said the team examined eight gur-making units in Charsadda and sealed five of them for using sugar and non-food colours in the making of the gur. He said that about 4,000 kilograms of substandard gur was also seized.
