PML-N protests torture of workers

LAHORE:The PML-N on Friday lodged strong protest in Punjab Assembly against torture of its workers and elected MPAs by police on the premises of an accountability court.

During the question hour of Punjab Assembly session that was chaired by Deputy Speaker Mir Dost Mohammed Mazari, Khawaja Salman Rafique, PML-N MPA who is under NAB detention, while speaking on point of order told the House that once again workers had been tortured by police on court premises.

He stated that not only workers but the elected MPAs of the opposition were also being tortured by police which was highly regretful.

Rana Muhammed Iqbal Khan, senior member of the opposition also lodged protest over the issue and demanded Law Minister Raja Basharat take notice of it.

Mir Dost Mohammed Mazari also expressed displeasure over the incident and instructed the law minister to take notice of the occurrence. While responding to it, the law minister stated that already this matter was discussed with the DIG Operations when the incident of torture of political workers occurred on court premises a few days ago.

He said such situation occurred when large number of workers tried to enter the courtroom without permission as only 30 persons are allowed there.

However, he said torture of political workers was really regretful and this matter would be taken up with the police hierarchy. The PML-N didn’t express satisfaction with the answer of the law minister and announced staging boycott of the PA proceedings.

Meanwhile, the opposition also pointed out quorum which the House failed to meet the quorum and the PA was prorogued. Chaudhry Zaheerud Din, provincial minister for prosecution, also slammed PML-N for “promoting violence” in politics and stated that its MPA Taufeeq Butt who targeted PTI workers in Gujranwala during the long march of Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Meanwhile, PML-N MPAs, including Khawaja Salman Rafique and Azma Bokhari, while talking to the media outside Punjab Assembly flayed the PTI government for “unleashing a reign of terror” against its political rivals. Azma Bokhari stated that police were being directed to torture political workers and MPAs, and when the opposition wanted to take up this issue on the floor of the House, the proceedings were prorogued.

She stated the process of legislation was bulldozed in PA by the government. Khawaja Salman Rafique said that the prime minister was busy with different works and showing a dictatorial behaviour.

He added a curfew-like situation was created in an open court by the government. PML-N MPA from Gujranwala Taufeeq Butt while talking to the media said that the government only believed in victimising the political opponents even on the floor of the PA. He said the government prorogued the session instead of responding to the complaints of the opposition.
