LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Chief Dr. Tahirul Qadri expressed grief at the loss of life and property due to flash flood in South Punjab. He was addressing the party leaders at a meeting on Tuesday.
Dr Qadri said the farmers of South Punjab were the worst affected not only by floods but also by the huge corruption going on these days in the making of protective bunds and other measures in the name of minimising the devastation of floods.
He alleged that the government officials were minting billions from such projects and were practically doing nothing to protect the people from floods which came every year. He said his allegations of corruption would become clear if a foreign company was allowed to inspect the so-called projects undertaken by the government officials.
He said every year the influential families deliberately breached the embankments only to protect their own property but also let the poor farmers of South Punjab drown who had nowhere to appeal except before the Almighty Allah.
He said the real face of the rulers could be seen from the 2010 Flood Commission Report of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah. He said the commission report held government of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif responsible for all the deaths and devastation.
He said all the officials who were named as the persons responsible had been awarded with lucrative posts in the Punjab government, thus making a mockery of the justice system of the country just like they made a joke of the Model Town Commission Report.
Dr. Tahirul Qadri said that every year the rulers and their cronies just visited the flooded areas and made pictures take and made false promises. Dr. Tahirul Qadri said the rulers had left the poor farmers of Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur and Muzaffarghar at the mercy of the nature.
Later, a delegation of Majlis Wahdat Muslemin (MWM) led by political secretary Nasir Sherazi called on Dr Qadri. MWM leader apprised Dr Qadri of the alleged victimisation the PML-N government was committing against the workers of the MWM and PAT in Gilgit-Baltistan province. They warned the PML-N that it had become a mafia in GB and a decisive political struggle against it had become the need of the hour.
Talking to the media, Nasir Sherazi said all the opposition parties must get united at Punjab level to end the fascist rule of the PML-N adding that his party had started contacting like-minded parties on the single point agenda of removing the PML-N government. He alleged that the PML-N government was using state power to crush the opponents, but did nothing to curb the terrorism and terrorists. The MWM leaders said they had accepted the invitation of Dr Qadri for joining the ceremony of launching the syllabus of peace in Islamabad on July 29.
