About 121 postgraduate and 25 undergraduate deserving and talented students of University of Agriculture Faisalabad got scholarships under the Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) for the academic year 2014/15.
In this regard, a certificate and card distribution ceremony was held at Iqbal Auditorium, in which Directorate of Financial Aid, UAF, Director Dr Hafeez Sadaqat, PEEF Disbursement Manager Nasir Subhani and Chairperson Home Economics distributed the scholarships.
Addressing on the occasion, Nasir Subhani said that the PEEF was initially set up with seed money of Rs2 billion, which had been raised to more than Rs13 billion. Since the commencement of its operation in 2009; PEEF has so far awarded more than 100,000 scholarships. He said the PEEF was awarding 20,000 scholarships every year; the PEEF was a proactive scholarship scheme which provided funds at the doorstep of the talented and deserving students and the allocation of these scholarships was on the basis of tehsil level so that students of that tehsil could be able to compete with the students of same tehsil. He said funds aimed at promoting academic excellence by providing financial support to talented students to help them in realising their potential. This programme envisages developing the overall personality of students and creating a critical mass of talented students that will contribute to the development of society. He said it provided an opportunity for talented and less privileged students to get education on a par with the more fortunate ones.
Dr Hafeez Sadaqat said around 1,000 UAF students got scholarships under the PEEF so far. He lauded the steps being taken on the part of the Punjab government for the cause of education and provided education to the deserving students. He said financial sponsorship of deserving students helped in creating soothing impact on the community and bringing a positive and healthy social change in the long run. He said the PEEF was an umbrella for the low income class so that their talented children could continue their studies that would lead to the bright future. He said education was the prerequisite to compete with the rest of the world and steps were afoot to improve the literacy rate.
