KARACHI: Trials for the selection of the national hockey team for the Olympics qualifiers will be held on Friday (today).
The trials were delayed because of the sudden death of selector Arshad Ali Chawdhry, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) said on Thursday.
It said the trials would be held on Friday at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Islamabad.
The national team will be announced today.
Sources said the players continued their practice despite the death of one of the selectors, which forced PHF to reduce trials to one day. Trials were earlier scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, president Akhtar Rasool and secretary Rana Mujahid condoled the death of former Olympian and member national selection committee Arshad Chawdhry who died in Lahore on Thursday. He was 65.
In a condolence message, Akhtar and Rana said that Arshad’s untimely death saddened the entire hockey fraternity across the country.
“He was a dedicated hockey lover for whom the game always remained supreme. Arshad had to attend the trials for the selection of national team in Islamabad on June 11 (today). But owing to his bad health couldn’t attend,” the PHF statement said. Arshad represented Pakistan in two Olympics, (Munich 1972) and (Montreal 1976).
