SUKKUR: The Punjab Police arrested and handed over at least seven people, including the Nikah Khawan, to the Sindh Police, for alleged involvement in abduction, forced conversion and underage marriage of two Hindu sisters Reena and Ravina. However, the main accused, Safdar Ali and Barkat Ali, who had reportedly kidnapped the girls remain untraced.

The Punjab Police are conducting raids in Rahimyar Khan district. Some relatives of Safdar Ali and Barkat Ali were also rounded up.

The Addl IG Sukkur Range, Dr Jameel Ahmed, told the media that the marriage of two Hindu girls was assisted by the local religious leaders. He said a cleric is under arrest for allegedly helping the accused in shifting the girls from Daharki to Rahimyar Khan.

He said police are working round-the-clock to ensure safe recovery of the abducted girls and their production before the court.

Earlier, the government was forced into action after the videos of the victims’ father, Hari Lal complaining of his daughters abduction and forcible conversion went viral on the social media. Hari Lal had lodged an FIR on March 20.

Meanwhile, the Hindu community along with members of the civil society took out protest rallies in Mirpur Mathello and Dad Leghari against the incident and demanded early recovery of the girls.
