Islamabad : The High Commission of Canada has launched the ‘Canvas for Change’ project to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags in Pakistan while supporting the women’s entrepreneurship.
According to Canadian high commissioner Wendy Gilmour, the initiative is not only meant to mark the International Women’s Day and support Canada’s international action on climate change but it also shows solidarity with the Clean and Green Pakistan campaign.
The ‘Canvas for Change’ project will be implemented in collaboration with ‘Second Cup’, a Canadian coffee chain with outlets across Pakistan, and the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC), a local NGO working for the promotion and protection of child rights.
Under it, canvas bags will be made by women entrepreneurs as part of SPARC’s programmes to provide marginalised women with opportunities to learn and earn.
The Canadian High Commission will provide training to those women entrepreneurs on skill development as their new business grows.
Second Cup is supporting this project as part of its corporate social responsibility programme, which also includes other environmental initiatives such as the Rainforest Alliance Certifications and Fair Trade Coffees.
Wendy Gilmour thanked Managing Director of Second Cup Pakistan Asim Majid and SPARC Executive Director Sajjad Cheema for their support and engagement in the project.
She also praised chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women Khawar Mumtaz, cricketer and first woman commentator Marina Iqbal, and former captain of Pakistan women’s cricket team Sana Mir for helping launch the initiative.
“The collaboration among public, private and non-governmental sectors is key to finding innovative ways to help environment and improving the lives of women,” she said.
The high commissioner said the ‘Canvas for Change’ project would create a new opportunity for women entrepreneurs to launch own sustainable enterprise and would encouraging everyone to take action against climate change by avoiding the use of single-use plastic and making the important switch to reusable shopping bags.
