A dark day for New Zealand

Newspost

March 16, 2019

It was heart wrenching to watch the video which showed how the terrorist entered into a mosque in New Zealand and shot down dozens of people. The attack was carried out in New Zealand where mass killings of such a kind are rare. The 2017 Global Peace Index, which compares 162 countries for the risk of personal violence, rates New Zealand as the world’s second safest country just after Iceland. This is for the first time that an attacker apparently streamed the video of an assault live on Facebook.

The man who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for his actions. In this time of tragedy, Pakistanis offer deep condolences to the people of New Zealand, especially the Muslim community. The attack clearly depicts that terrorism knows no boundaries and has no religion or identity. We hope that the authorities will catch the perpetrators and justice will be done.

New Zealand, which is considered one of the most peaceful and safest countries of the world, witnessed the worst terrorist attack. At least 49 people were killed in the recent attack on two mosques. The world must understand that terrorism has no faith or religion. Terrorism is the enemy of the more than seven billion people on this planet.

The West which has always painted Muslims as terrorists must realise that terrorism is our common enemy. And defeating it needs a collective well-thought-out strategy. Only blaming Muslims for terrorist activities will not solve the problem. All countries must act together to help defeat terrorism.
