Maryam confirms Nawaz will undergo angiography

LAHORE: Jinnah Hospital’s medical board has recommended angiography of the incarcerated former premier Nawaz Sharif.

The ousted PM Nawaz Sharif, 69, who is serving a seven-year jail term in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case spent fourth day at the Jinnah Hospital, where a special medical board has been monitoring his health. Sources further said the hospital administration has sent recommendations of the medical board to home department and health department.

Talking to media Monday, Allama Iqbal Medical College’s principal Prof Dr Arif Tajammul said there was no immediate threat to the health of former premier. He said the present medical board was formed to assess if there was any immediate threat to the health of Nawaz and to prepare plan of action for future treatment.

Maryam Nawaz, Shahbaz and other family members of Nawaz again visited the hospital Monday. In an informal talk with the reporters, Maryam also confirmed that the hospital’s medical board had advised angiography for her father and his treatment is going on. The sources said the consent of the patient would be sought before performing any procedure, adding the hospital administration had also informed the home department and health department observing that no decision could be taken for further treatment unless angiography was performed. An aluminum glass door in one of the corridors of the Jinnah Hospital was damaged owing to influx of visitors including security personnel, PML-N leaders, party workers and reporters. Meanwhile, former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif also visited Data Darbar.

INP adds: Jinnah Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Asim Hameed said Monday that all facilities were being provided to Nawaz in the hospital on the directive of Punjab government. Talking to media, he said they were conducting different tests of former premier and the medical board would decide next course of action after viewing old medical reports. He said reports of ECG, echocardiogram (echo) and other tests had been received Sunday. However, he could not share them with the media.

He said the medical reports of the ex-PM had been dispatched to the interior ministry. He said the government had the right to shift Nawaz.

He further said since Nawaz’s personal doctor Adnan was not a government employee therefore he could not be included in the medical board.
