3,216 candidates contesting in Haripur

HARIPUR: About 3,216 candidates are contesting the May 30 local government elections from Haripur district.
According to the office of District Returning Officer, tehsil Ghazi and Haripur have 45 union councils that have been further subdivided into 155 village councils and 25 neighborhood councils with a total of 2004 seats.
There are 171 candidates in the run for 45 seats of District Council, while 234 aspirants are contesting for the same number of seats from two tehsils.
There are 1,426 candidates against 1,104 general category seats while for 360 seats of women there are 262 contestants; 569 candidates are contesting for 180 seats of peasants/workers category while 540 are trying their luck for youth councillors.
However, only four candidates have filed nomination papers for 180 seats reserved for minorities.
Official records shared with media indicate that there are 577,480 registered voters, including 259,319 women voters. Authorities have set up 510 polling stations, including 85 for men and 85 for women while 340 stations are combined.
