KARACHI: The 48th National Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship will begin at WAPDA Sports Complex in Lahore from Monday (tomorrow).
As many 13 provincial and departmental teams have confirmed their participation in the event which will conclude on May 17, Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob said.
He said the event was a part of the PVF’s annual calendar which would be organised in a befitting manner. Yaqoob added that the PVF was striving hard to scout talent in volleyball which is a popular sport in the rural areas.
“The forthcoming championship will provide the federation an opportunity to spot talent and groom it for future national duty”, said Yaqoob, a former top Police official.
The managers and coaches of the participating teams would meet at the venue of the event on Sunday (today) at 5pm to finalise the draws. The PVF secretary Shahid Kamal would preside over the meeting.
WAPDA will defend the title. They had defeated Police in the last edition held at Sialkot.
Yaqoob said he has appointed Mohammad Buksh Javed as the organising secretary of the championship.
Army, Navy, Pakistan Air Force (PAF), WAPDA, Police, Railways, Pakistan Education Board, Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and FATA would be showing their worth.
On May 16, the PVF general council meeting will also be held during which the new office-bearers of the PVF would be elected for a term of four years.
