JHELUM: The district government and the British High Commission, Islamabad, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint efforts to eradicate forced marriages, parental child abduction, abandoned spouses and other problems of overseas Pakistanis living in the country.
The MoU signing ceremony was held at the DCO office and the memorandum was signed by District Committee on Overseas Pakistanis Chairman and MPA Chaudhry Lal Hussain, DCO Jhelum Zulfiqar Ahmed Ghumman, head assistance unit British High Commission Albert David and executive director of an NGO Khalida Saleemi.
Speaking on the occasion, MPA Ch Lal Hussain said the Punjab government is paying special attention to solve problems of overseas Pakistanis. DCO Jhelum Zulfiqar Ahmed Ghumman said the problems of the overseas Pakistanis could not be solved without coordinated efforts.
Albert David said the UK High Commission needs efforts of the local government to solve problems of overseas Pakistanis. He said many Pakistanis of Jhelum areas are living in the UK who need help. District Jhelum is one of the areas of Pakistan after Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) which has maximum number of overseas Pakistanis in the UK.
These migrants have not broken their relations with their native areas and hence marriages and other family functions in Pakistan are still a big attraction for these Pakistanis. In this regard, it has been one of the largest problems that due to lack of education and pressure of family many forced marriages take place in Jhelum district. That results in divorces and sometimes ends in serious circumstances which have been reported by local and international media in both countries.
