Farmers stage demo against canal closure

FAISALABAD: Farmers of Chak 265/RB and Bhaguwali village staged a demonstration against the closure of Rakh Branch Canal for the last 90 days at Roshanwala Bypass Chowk on Friday.
The protesting farmers were chanting slogans against the Irrigation Department. They said that the canal closure had caused a severe damage to the standing crops in the villages. Addressing the protesters, Punjab Insaf Kisan Forum general secretary Dr Sajjad Randhawa, Chaudhry Liaqat Ali and Rashid Sajid Gill criticised the Rakh Branch executive engineer and his staff for arbitrarily closing the canal. They warned of staging a demonstration outside the Faisalabad Canal Office if the canal was not opened immediately.
MAN COMMITS SUICIDE: A man committed and a woman attempted suicide in separate incidents here on Friday.
In the first incident, Shakeel Ahmad of Chak 296/RB, Wakeelwala, ended his life by swallowing poisonous pills. The motive behind the incident could not be ascertained so far. In the second incident, a married woman attempted suicide by hanging herself with a fan at Chak 128/GB. The motive behind the incident is said to be domestic issues.
11KG CHARAS SEIZED: Millat Town police recovered 2kg heroin and 11kg charas from a car near Kamalpur Interchange.
Police signalled a car but driver Shahzeb did not stop it and it struck against a pole. As a result, Shahzeb, his wife and a minor son were injured. During search of the car, police recovered charas and heroin from it. A case has been registered against the car driver and his wife.
