PESHAWAR: Eidul Fitr was celebrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with religious fervour.
The festival was marked on two different days in the light of the announcements of the official Central Ruet-e-Hilal (moon-sighting) headed by Mufti Munibur Rehman Committee and private local body led by Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai. The latter is based in the historic Masjid Qasim Ali Khan in Peshawar.
A meeting of the local committee convened on Thursday and headed by Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai had declared Eidul Fitr on Friday on the basis of the testimonials received from different parts of the province. Those who followed the announcement celebrated the festival on Friday.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, however, resolved to mark the festival on Saturday with the rest of country as per the announcement of the central moon-sighting committee. The people who followed the announcement of the central committee celebrated the festival on Saturday.
Major Eid congregations were held in the provincial capital’s Masjid Mahabat Khan, Masjid Qasim Ali Khan, Masjid Darwaish and Al Zarghoni Masjid on Friday. The biggest among such gatherings was at Bagh-i-Naran in Hayatabad.
Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai led the prayers at Masjid Qasim Ali Khan while Maulana Tayyab Qureshi headed the prayers at the 17th century Masjid Mahabat Khan which is undergoing a long-delayed conservation work nowadays.
Eid prayers were offered at a number of places in Peshawar on Saturday. The congregations were held mostly in old parts of Peshawar, Gulbahar Colony and Cantt areas.
Prayers were offered at Eidgah on the Charsadda Road. Maulana Muhammad Ismail led the prayers. Congregations were arranged at the Sunehri Masjid and Gulberg Colony as well.
Special prayers were offered for peace, stability and security of the country and well-being of the people.
A senior Pakistan People’s Party leader, former provincial president of the party and erstwhile minister, Syed Zahir Ali Shah, offered prayers at Eidgah and exchanged greeting with the people.
Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra offered Eidul Fitr prayers at Governor’s House. Provincial secretaries were there as well. Later, the governor exchanged Eid greetings with the people.
A number of figures hailing from various sections of the society called on the governor at the Governor’s House and exchanged Eid greetings with him.
Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (Retired) Dost Muhammad Khan offered prayers at the Chief Minister’s House. He met the government officials, elite, lawyers, businessmen and people on the 2nd Day of Eidul Fitr and exchanged greetings with them.
Eid congregations were held in other districts of the province as well. Youngsters flocked to various recreation sports in Peshawar during the three days of Eidul Fitr. Parks in Hayatabad and city were teeming with children.
The Playland set up on a portion of the historic Shahi Bagh received the maximum visitors. Youngsters also turned to the part of the Shahi Bagh which has been renamed as Shalimar Garden after renovation with the funding from the USAID.
The families thronged the Chacha Younsas Family Park which has been set up in a portion of the historic Panj Teerath archaeological site.
The women visited Purdah Bagh whose space has shrunk after the construction of a wedding hall on its premises.
The children were seen enjoying horse, donkey and Qingqi rides in the neighbourhood of Gor Khatri Archeological Complex.
