LAHORE: Higher Education Department (HED) Punjab has notified an inquiry committee against registrar and other officials of the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore for their alleged unlawful appointments.
The inquiry committee, headed by Additional Secretary (Planning) HED Punjab Muhammad Tanveer Jabbar, will probe the allegations against Registrar Muhammad Asif and others raised in the complaints submitted in NAB Lahore, Anti Corruption Establishment (ACE) and office of Secretary HED and writ petition submitted in the Lahore High Court.
University of Education Registrar Manzoom Akhtar is the member of the inquiry committee. The committee has been directed to submit its findings, preferably, within two weeks by affording an opportunity of personal hearing.
Sources in the HED said the ‘others’ mentioned in the notification, though not named, included Controller of Examinations and a deputy registrar. The sources further said the allegations against Muhammad Asif and Controller Zaigham Nusrat were the same as both were allegedly unlawfully appointed as they lacked the required experience for the respective posts.
They said the two officials were placed on top of panel of three candidates, for each post, forwarded by the UET Lahore to HED some years back. They further said the HED Punjab would also include those into the inquiry who submitted the panels with malafide intentions. Sources in the HED said the appointments of Registrar and Controller were made in 2011 during the tenure of Lt Gen (r) Muhammad Akram Khan as the UET VC. They added on different occasions the HED issued suspension orders of the said officials but to no avail.
It is pertinent to mention here that the appointment of Muhammad Asif as Registrar and some other UET officials has already been challenged in the Lahore High Court by Ghulam Hussain, retired lab supervisor of the UET Lahore.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Hassan Munir Anwer has been appointed as Treasurer of the UET Lahore on a four-year contract. According to the notification Governor Punjab/Chancellor UET has approved the appointment of Hassan Munir Anwer in BS-20. The four-year contract appointment is extendable for further three years subject to satisfactory performance.
