26/11 statement: PTI activists want treason case filed against Nawaz Sharif

PESHAWAR: A local leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and two members of the local government approached the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police to lodge a treason case against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for his recent statement about the Mumbai attacks.

A police officer told The News that the application had been received, but no case had been lodged yet.

Arbab Nisar, a local PTI leader and aspirant for the party ticket to contest election from PK-4 Peshawar, Rahman Afzal, a member of the District Council and Shabbir, the nazim of union council 32 submitted the application to the Bhanamari Police Station seeking to book Nawaz Sharif for his statement carried by the media on May 12.

“He stated in the statement that those who attacked the Mumbai hotel belonged to Pakistan. This statement damaged the reputation and sovereignty of the country. The statement was not based on facts, but it was issued to damage the reputation of Pakistan,” said the applicants.

The applicants termed the statement by Nawaz Sharif an effort to divert attention of the nation from real issues. They stated that Nawaz Sharif occupied the top government position and was disqualified by the court after his conviction.

“The statement of the former prime minister is an offence under the Official Secrets Act 1923 as well as the Pakistan Penal Code. His act is a high treason under Article 6 of the Constitution. It is requested that legal action may be taken against the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and he may be booked under the relevant law,” stated the applicants.

However, the police have not registered the case yet at the Bhanamari Police Station. It was learnt that the application was forwarded to the senior officials to seek their opinion.

Meanwhile, another application was submitted in Hashtnagri Police Station seeking to register FIR against former premier Nawaz Sharif. One Rahman Jalal, a resident of Peshawar, filed the application in the evening.
