Islamabad: Deputy High Commissioner of India in Pakistan JP Singh said the new generation of Indian diplomats is much inclined to resolve conflicts between India and Pakistan through diplomacy than its past counterparts.
Singh was speaking at an orientation visit to Pakistan officer trainees of Indian Foreign Services at Sustainable Development Policy Institute. He said that more and more Indian officers want Pakistan to be their first official appointment. He said that 32 newly-recruited officers of 2014-batch preferred Pakistan over the rest of the world for internship.
Dr Abid Suleri, Executive Director, SDPI, said that people-to-people contacts are paramount in the scenario for better future relations between the two countries for which more visits of the kind from the two sides should be arranged and encouraged. Shafqat Kakakhel, Chairperson, Board of Governors, SDPI, said it is about time both the countries should focus on positive issues and set aside the conflicts for the time being. “Cooperation in positive areas would certainly contribute to economic development and peace building between the two countries,” he said.
Earlier, the internees were given a presentation on the relevance of research being undertaken at SDPI especially furthering peace and cooperation between the two countries and developing a common narrative on history, resolving trans-boundary issues like water and energy and economic integration in south Asia.
