CJP Nisar takes up basic amenities, other cases today

PESHAWAR: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar is taking up the cases related to basic rights of residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Supreme Court’s Peshawar Registry today.

The cases pertained to the provision of safe drinking water, health and education facilities, dumping of hospitals’ waste. The three-member bench headed by the CJP would also take up the application of the parents seeking judicial inquiry into the Army Public School carnage.

In his first two-day visit to the Supreme Court Peshawar Registry, the CJP had expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

He had criticised the provincial government for failing to set up a standard hospital or school in Peshawar in the past five years.

At the jam-packed courtroom, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had questioned the performance of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI-led coalition government. He had observed that he had heard about change in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but there was nothing on the ground.

The CJP had summoned Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and told him that he had heard a lot about their good governance, but the situation on the ground was different.

This time the government departments would provide reports about education and health facilities in the province.

As per the supplementary list for May 9, a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah would hear cases related to basic rights of the citizens filed through Human Rights Cell of the Supreme Court.

The cases are related to disposal of infectious hospital waste, condition of primary and secondary education, provision of safe drinking water, condition of government hospitals and ban on quacks/unqualified medical practitioners in KP.

The court will also take up the application of the parents seeking judicial inquiry into the Army Public School attack and the matters related to the alleged mismanagement and lack of facilities in Ayub Medical Complex, Abbottabad. However, the bench will resume work at 3pm.

On the other hand, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Services Department has issued a letter to chairmen of the eight Medical Teaching Institutions to ensure their presence at the Supreme Court Peshawar Registry Bench today as the cases about the health sector of the province would also be heard.
