KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday arrested an unmarried couple involved in a bid to fraudulently enter Canada via Azerbaijan.

A spokesman said staff of FIA’s Anti Human Trafficking Circle, Karachi, arrested Mujeeb ur Rehman Siddiqui and Salma Abdul Ghaffat, residents of Karachi.

The couple were deported from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Karachi as they attempted to get entry in Azerbaijan on the basis of fake British passports for proceeding to Canada.

At arrival in Karachi, FIA immigration officials detained them and sent them to the Anti Human Trafficking Circle for questioning. During the interrogation, Siddiqui disclosed that he arranged British passports while he was in Saudi Arabia. He said he paid a Sri Lankan agent, Vivek, $2,000 for the passports on the advice of a cousin, who was settled in Canada. Both accused had departed from Karachi on Pakistani passports and visas for Azerbaijan and concealed their fake British passports from the immigration. A case FIR has been registered against the couple and an investigation is under way.
