The academic council of Karachi University (KU) met on Monday and unanimously passed a resolution calling for the revival of the University Act 1972.
The meeting was chaired by Prof Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan, vice chancellor of the varsity. The members resolved that the Sindh Assembly should restore the University Act 1972, the powers of the academic council and the autonomous status of higher educational institutions.
Dr Riaz Ahmed proposed the resolution that was second by Dr SM Taha and Prof Dr Jameel Kazmi. They demanded that the Sindh government should immediately revive the original law that was introduced by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
They said that instructing and dictating to the decision-making bodies like the academic council would place restrictions on academic freedom in the varsities of Sindh.
