From vaccines to death

An innocent child died a couple of days ago when he was allegedly administered expired measles vaccine. Such incidents are a daily occurrence in rural parts of Sindh. That expired injections were not disposed of hints at the poor level of management in the hospital. It is the responsibility of the distribution officer to check that all expired medicines and injections are disposed of in a timely manner. In addition, the government has completely turned away from its responsibilities. The number of children dying in Thar is rapidly increasing. However, the authorities concerned haven’t worked to improve the living conditions of the people.

The open sale of spurious medicines or the incidents related to death caused by expired injections are not new. State-run medical institutions across the province are in a deplorable condition. It is time the Sindh government took action against people who are behind this sorry state of medical centres. Profiteers who do not think twice before putting the lives of patients in danger should be brought to book. The relevant authorities must take of this matter and take necessary steps to tackle the situation that pose serious threats to the lives of citizen.
