LAHORE: A total of 16254 eligible voters of the Lahore High Court Bar Association will exercise their right of vote today (Friday) to elect new President as well as three other office-bearers for year 2018-19.
Anwarul Haq Punno and Chaudhry Shahid Buttar have been backed by the Professional Group led by Hamid Khan and Independent Group led by Ahsan Bhoon after the death of Asma Jahangir.
Aazar Latif Khan of a newly-formed group “Reformers” is also vying for the same slot. Former governor and senior lawyer Sardar Latif Khan Khosa is among his main supporters. Chaudhry Noor Samand Khan, Shaista Qaiser, Rashid Ali Wains and Masood Gujjar are vying for the office of vice-president. There would be a one-on-one contest on secretary’s slot between Hassan Iqbal Warraich and Fayaz Ahmad Ranjha.
Five candidates are in the run for finance secretary, including Ahsan A Sial, Hafiz Allahyar Sipra, Zeeshan Sulehria, Ansar Jamil Gujjar and Farrukh Shahzad Kamboh. Strict security arrangements have been made to ensure a peaceful election of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) for year 2018-19. Chairman of election board Javed Iqbal Raja told media persons that the complete polling would be held on biometric system. He said 16254 registered voters would exercise their right to vote. He said five polling stations would be established to hold polling from 9am to 5pm with one hour break.
The election board had learnt that lawyers from regional seats had also got them registered at the principal seat (Lahore) and had been participating in the polling for the last many years.
Mr Raja said double registration of the lawyers had been cancelled and they would not be able to cast vote in the election of principal seat. Separate elections were held at the regional seats, he explained.
He said the lawyers registered at regional seats, including Bahawalpur and Multan, would not be eligible to cast their votes even they got any favourable decision from Punjab Bar Council, a regulatory body of lawyers on province level.
He said Rangers had been deployed in and outside the Lahore High Court while only two entry points–Masjid gate and Turner Road gate—would be used for the entrance. He said only registered voters would be allowed to enter the polling stations. He said that car parking facility for lawyers would be available on Mall Road between Nasser Bagh and Bank Square.
