PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) head Senator Sirajul Haq has asked the Supreme Court to take suo moto notice and stop possible horse-trading in the upcoming Senate election.

“The SC should take immediate notice and stop possible horse-trading in the upcoming election for the Upper House of the Parliament. It will be a dilemma if the court remained silent on the issue as it is the only hope of the people that can stop the use of money in the process,” Sirajul Haq said while addressing the mass wedding ceremony of 50 orphan and poor couples arranged by the Al-Khidmat Foundation here on Wednesday.

The JI chief lashed out at the government for delaying the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said that nobody was satisfied with the prevailing political situation in the country. Sirajul Haq said the general election must be held on time so the democratic process could continue.

“The current system in the country is only good for the mafia. The corrupt elite have done nothing for the general public in decades. They only focus on making more properties and increasing bank balance,” the amir of the JI said while addressing the gathering.

Sirajul Haq said those doing politics on the basis of money were sitting idle in the Parliament and they were not interested in serving the poor people.

“The state institutions should follow Islamic teachings and work for the welfare of the general public. Currently, legislation is being done only for the rights of the elite and nobody bothers to work for the common man,” said the JI chief.

The JI amir expressed displeasure over the performance of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He said that corruption would have been brought to an end had the NAB played its role.

Sirajul Haq congratulated the newly wed couples and said in a lighter vein that everyone talked about having a second and third marriage so his party also thought of arranging the weddings of deserving people.

The JI leaders Abdul Wasi, Sabir Hussain Awan, Al-Khidmat Foundation head Khalid Waqas and others also addressed the function.

An official of the Al-Khidmat Foundation said the brides were also given dowry worth Rs6.5 million in total donated by a social worker Hikmanuddin. Lunch was also arranged for around 1,200 guests on the occasion.
