No progress without science: governor

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Muhammad Rafique Rajwana has said no nation or state in the developing and underdeveloped world can progress without promoting science, technology and economics.

These disciplines are essential to provide people with quality life and there is a need to promote these disciplines. According to a handout issued on Wednesday, the governor expressed these views while addressing the 81st Convocation of Kinnaird College for Women.

The governor said that it gives him great pleasure to address the young graduates at the convocation of one of Pakistan’s highly regarded women’s institution. He said he is impressed that this prestigious 104 years old institution produces some 750 quality graduates and M Phil every year, who become leaders not only within their own families and workplaces, but also at the national and international levels. He said it has given him immense satisfaction and delight to meet the brilliant young women who have just be honoured for being outstanding in all fields and have been awarded gold medals in their respective disciplines.

The governor said that Kinnaird College has always produced high achievers. He congratulated the principal and faculty members on the excellent result in the last academic year. He said Kinnaird College students have definitely set benchmarks for future generations. Our dream for an educated and an enlightened Pakistan rests with them and other like them. He said he is profoundly impressed to learn that the college facilitates students to specialise in almost all the modes of traditional knowledge as well as new science and technology programmes. He asked the students of the college: “Acquiring degrees is not enough; you should come up to the new phase of your life, your education has prepared you well knowledge to make this world a better, more human, tolerant and just place.” Later, the governor distributed degrees/medals among the graduates.
