Cop martyred, another injured by muggers

A cop was martyred while another was injured by robbers in separate incidents on Tuesday. Head Constable Ashraf Tanoli was gunned down by unknown assailants for resisting their bid to snatch his motorcycle at Vita Chowrangi, Korangi, late on Monday night, District Korangi SSP Nauman Siddiqui told The News.

He said the cop was intercepted by the attackers who eventually shot at him and took away his motorbike. The injured was moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment, but he died during treatment, he said, adding that the cop suffered three bullets to abdomen.

The deceased was posted at the West-Zone headquarters, he said, and added that the body had been handed over to heirs for burial. Taking notice of the incident, Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal directed the District Korangi SSP to arrest the attackers and submit to him a report immediately.

Separately, a policeman was shot and injured by unknown attackers in the city’s Defence View area on Tuesday night. Jamshaid Quarters Division SP Dr Rizwan Ahmed told The News that a group of robbers was looting people in the area when DSP Iffat Chaudhry along with his squad incidentally reached the scene.

The robbers panicked and opened fire at the police party, he said, adding that Constable Asif Ali, who sitting in the police mobile, suffered a bullet to his leg.

The attackers managed to make a getaway and the injured was rushed to the JPMC for treatment where doctors declared him safe after treatment.

Taking notice of the incident, Sindh police chief AD Khowaja sought a report from the District South SSP and ordered him to apprehend the perpetrators.
