A meeting of residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) was held at the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) office on Monday to apprise them of efforts being made to improve the area’s water supply.

The residents were briefed by CBC Vice President Aziz Suharwardy who explained to them that extra water being supplied to VIPs living in the area had been cut “for the first time in the CBC’s history”.

He credited the support of the current Karachi corps commander as being instrumental in implementing the cuts and ensuring that all tax payers were treated equally. “The extra water has now been diverted to residents’ houses and is being equitably supplied to people of the area.”

Suharwardy told the residents that with the support of the present corps commander, station commander and executive officer planning was being done to enhance water supply to the locality. This strategy, he added, had enabled 10,000 residents to get more water since April 2017.

On residents’ demand for more tankers, he explained that, as per the water wing’s report, 14 million gallons per day were needed for areas falling within the CBC’s jurisdiction but the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) was only supplying 6.5mgd on average.

The area residents were also informed that plans were afoot to set up four Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants to augment the locality’s existing water supply. “The RO plants have been approved by the board and we hope to have the first one running in six to eight months, if all goes per schedule. Each RO plant will allow us to provide 100 more tankers per day; once all four plants are functional we can give 400 more tankers, which would be a substantial improvement,” said Suharwardy. On the residents demand for two tankers to be given during one visit, he assured them that he would respond to them by next week after discussing all modalities.
