Zainab’s murder

Zainab’s murder

I woke up to the news of a young girl being raped and murdered. What shocked me was the fact that her body was found in a garbage heap. That children in our society can meet with such a horrific fate is shocking. It breaks my heart to accept that we have failed to provide a safe environment to our children to live in. Zainab, the girl who became a victim of lust and greed, would not have thought that her life will be taken away from her in such a brutal manner. Her doting parents wouldn’t have thought that their daughter will die such a painful death.

It is good to note that this incident has invited the much-needed attention of the authorities which, in the past, haven’t done much to tackle child abuse cases. What happened to Zainab is unfortunately a daily occurrence. Not a single week passes when we do not read news about missing children or a child who was murdered after rape. The reaction and outrage that followed the incident is exactly what we needed to urge the authorities to take remedial measures to deal with such crimes. It now rests with the government how it will find a solution to protect the Zainabs of our country.

The shocking news report about a child’s rape and murder in the Kasur district saddened the entire nation. But the tragic truth is that incidents like this one happen regularly in Kasur.

Last year, around 129 cases of child assault were reported from the region alone. The figure indicates that there is a dire need to give strict punishments to the people who are involved in such heinous crimes so that such incidents are never happened again.

Angry protesters took to streets after the dead body of Zainab was found in a garbage heap in Kasur. This is not the first time, and unfortunately not the last time, that this sort of incident has happened.

Where are the authorities? Why have they failed to protect our children? Instead of speeding up the investigation process, our authorities are wasting their time in blaming the media for instigating people.

Ours is a society where brutal and vicious incidents like the rape of innocent children happen on a regular basis. The horrendous case of Zainab’s rape and murder should be enough to highlight that the number of these crimes is increasing because criminals know they won’t be apprehended. They know they can roam the streets freely.

Had the authorities responded to the allegations of sexual violence in an adequate manner and punished people who were involved in rape crimes, the number of these crimes would have been fewer. It seems that our country is not for the weak and the poor. Unless we ensure strict implementation of the law, we cannot save our society from further deterioration.
