Weekly inflation falls 0.23pc

KARACHI: Sensitive price indicator (SPI) inflation for the week ended on January 11 marginally fell 0.23 percent over the previous week, but it rose 3.06 percent as compared to weekly inflation in the corresponding period a year earlier, official data showed on Friday.

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) recorded the SPI for the combined income group at 224.88 points for the week under review as compared to 225.39 points in the previous week and 218.21 points in the similar period a year earlier.

Weekly inflation for income group of up to Rs8,000 was marginally down 0.22 percent during the week under review as compared to the preceding week. SPI inflation for the income group (Rs8,001 to Rs12,000) fell 0.22 percent, followed by a 0.23 percent decrease for people earning between Rs12,001 and Rs18,000, a 0.23 percent decline for income group of Rs18,001 and Rs35,000 and a drop of 0.22 percent for income group of above Rs35,000.

PBS computes weekly price trend of 53 essential items from 17 urban centres with the base year of 2007/08.

Average prices of 17 items registered increase during the week under review over the previous week, while 10 products witnessed decrease in prices and prices of 26 items remained unchanged.

The products, which recorded increase in prices, included garlic (2.91pc), pulse moong washed (1.4pc), bananas (1.19pc), pulse gram washed (0.74pc), pulse masoor washed (0.57pc), rice basmati broken (0.46pc), cooked beef (0.36pc), mutton (0.32pc), beef with bone (0.30), vegetable ghee (0.17pc), curd (0.17pc), cooking oil tin (0.16pc), red chilly powder loose (0.14pc), rice Irri-6 (0.14pc), cooked daal (0.03pc), vegetable ghee loose/pouch (0.03pc) and wheat flour bag (0.02pc).

The items that recorded decrease included tomatoes (5.28pc), potatoes (3.86pc), eggs hen (3.52pc), onions (3.06pc), chicken (2.78pc), gur (1.04pc), pulse mash washed (0.19pc), sugar (0.19pc), georgette (0.15pc) and mustard oil (0.08pc).

The products, prices of which remained unchanged, included wheat, bread plain, milk fresh, powdered milk, salt powder loose, tea packet, tea prepared, cigarettes, long cloth, lawn printed, gents sandal, gents chappal, ladies sandal, electricity charges, gas charges, kerosene oil, firewood whole, electric bulb, energy saver, washing soap, match box, petrol, hi speed diesel, liquefied petroleum gas cylinder, telephone local call charges and soap.
