Ex-minister says Fata alliance being misused

BARA: A former federal minister and leader of the Fata Grand Alliance Hameedullah Jan Afridi said on Wednesday that some tribal Maliks were using the name of the alliance for their personal gains and advised them to stop misguiding tribespeople.

Talking to reporters, Hameedullah Jan said all tribal people appreciated the government for announcing abolition of Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) but Fata should not be merged with KP.

Most tribal people want a separate province, he said, adding, “We oppose Thana culture and will struggle for retaining our tribal customs and traditions.”

He complained that several elders and Maliks used name of the Fata Grand Alliance last week, but “it was not grand alliance, it was just Maliks’ alliance.”

Hameedullah Jan said that the Fata Grand Alliance had demanded since 2011 that Fata should become a separate province or Fata council like Gilgit-Baltistan.

“The government announcements had kept doubts of the tribesmen,” Hameedullah Jan stated, adding that the political parties are not sincere with the tribal people’s rights.

He said the Fata had already been destroyed in one and a half decades of militancy but the political parties did not want to rebuild education and health sectors.

“The political parties did not raise the issue of the tribal people such as their destroyed houses, business, bazaars, schools and hospitals in Fata,” he said, adding that political leaders only sympathised with tribesmen in media. He added that Fata faced 22 hours load-shedding creating a host of problems for people.
