PTI moves motion to bring attention to Sea View street racing menace

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) moved an adjournment motion in Tuesday assembly session, urging both the Sindh government and the police to take serious action against the menace of street racing.

The motion was moved by PTI’s Sindh Assembly Parliamentary Leader and PS-112 MPA, Khurrum Sher Zaman. The MPA stated that races that take place at the Sea View in Clifton have become a real threat and danger to the people of the area.

The motion came two days after a teenager was shot dead, while another suffered injuries, in a road rage incident. Racing through the Sea View has become a norm of young motorcycle and automobile drivers, which has led to people either being injured or even killed, said Zaman. The Sunday morning (December 3) incident involving the murder of an 18-year old boy is a prime example, added the MPA.

Regulate the activity

The PTI MPA claimed that many concerned citizens believe the slackness of the authorities involved have had an enormous impact in promoting the illegal street racing culture.

Their deliberate ignorance has given a rather noticeable boost to the drivers’ indifferent attitudes resulting in even the most unskilled drivers to cross the 100mph limit, he added.

If there are such a huge number of street racers, the Sindh government should consider providing a legitimate area where the activity takes place in a regulated and relatively safer environment, where drivers are required to have certification and use proper safety equipment, the PTI MPA suggested. “The regulation of the activity would make the city peaceful and safe for both the pedestrians and motorists.”

The MPA called on the home minister to act immediately to lead a crackdown on street racing or resign if he is unable to do anything in the case.

Subsidy for sugar mill owners

The opposition Pakistan Muslim League – Functional (PML-F) has announced it will approach the Sindh Assembly to raise its concerns regarding the cabinet’s decision to provide subsidy to owners of sugar mills and captive power plants in the province.

PML-F MPA Nusrat Seher Abbasi announced that the party would approach the secretariat on Wednesday (today) to either submit a resolution or an adjournment motion to discuss the decision.

She said the party would continue to voice its concerns against all such decisions of the Sindh government, which she claimed have been taken with the sole purpose of serving the interests of influential circles close to the ruling provincial party.

The Sindh cabinet in order to resolve the deadlock between the sugar cane growers and the millers so as for the crushing season to commence in Sindh, on Monday decided to grant an additional subsidy of Rs9.3 per kg for export of surplus sugar.
