On the occasion of Army Day, the Ambassador of Nepal, Bjarat Raj Paudyal and Military Attache, Col. Neeraj Paudyal hosted a reception in the Crystal Hall of Marriott.
It was not a big affair as far as such receptions go but it was attended by Defence Attaches of different countries, their wives and a few civilian couples. Though it is marked with parades and other nationalistic events in Nepal and other places, this was the first time Nepal decided to mark the occasion in Pakistan, with no chief guest and a homely atmosphere, as children were also present. The cake was cut by the hosts and the envoys of SAARC countries who were present on the stage, after the national anthems of Nepal and Pakistan had been played.
An informative video screened sights and sounds of Nepal and it was a learning experience, as facts and figures flashed across the screen listing the many exciting places that attract tourists to Nepal. Wedged between the high wall of the Himalaya and the steamy jungles of the Indian plains, Nepal is a land of snow peaks and Sherpas, yaks and yetis, monasteries and mantras. Tourism is the leading industry in Nepal and the largest source of foreign exchange and revenue. Possessing eight of the ten highest mountains in the world, Nepal is a hotspot destination for mountaineers, rock climbers and people seeking adventures. The Hindu and Buddhist heritage of Nepal and its cold weather are also strong attractions.
The Nepalese Army or Gurkha Army (Nepali) is the army of Nepal and a major component of the Military of Nepal. Service is voluntary and the minimum age for enrolment is 18 years. The army was known as The Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) during the monarchy system in Nepal but it was renamed Nepal Army in May, 2008 with the abolishing of the 238 year old monarchy. Gurkhas are considered among the best soldiers in the world.
