Vylegzhanin beats Ahmed in three sets

ISLAMABAD: Teenager Nikolay Vylegzhanin of Russia gave an exciting display of his tennis skills to earn a three-set victory over Ahmed Chaudhry of Pakistan on the opening day of the Serena Hotels ITF Futures Tennis Tournament at the Syed Dilawar Abbas PTF Complex on Tuesday.
On a day when only four singles matches were played, Vylegzhanin beat Ahmed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Both players showed some quality tennis, mostly from the baseline. The Russian broke Ahmed’s fourth serve after some solid exhibition of baseline rallies. He held his own serve to take the opening set.
Ahmed bounced back well and took advantage of some unforced errors by Vylegzhanin to win the second set.The third set turned out be a one-sided affair as the super fit Russian totally dominated the proceedings. He looked fitter and better in stamina and won the third with ease.
Muhammad Abid also moved into the second round after overpowering Muhammad Shoaib 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.In the men’s doubles first round, Pakistan’s junior ace Yousaf Khalil pairing with Afghanistan’s Asad Kebir stunned the Russian pair of Dmitiry Myagkov and
Ivan Ponomarenko 0-6, 7-5, (11-9).
It was one of the most exciting matches of the tournament so far and the crowd applauded both pairs for displaying great tennis skills and sportsmanship. Pakistan No 1 Aqeel Khan pairing with Shahzad Khan comfortably beat Muhammad Waqas Malik and Usman Rafique in straight sets.
The top seeded pair of David Perez Sanz and Kelsey Stevenson progressed to the second round by comfortably beating their opponents. Second seeds Peter Goldsteiner (Austria) and Julian Onken (Germany) breezed past the Mehmood Khan brothers. Vadim Alekseenko from Ukraine pairing Nikolay Vylegzhanin stunned the third seeded Russian pair of Shlava Dzhanashia and Ivan Nedelko.
