LANDIKOTAL: The residents of Awal Khan Killay here on Wednesday asked the government to repair the village road that was constructed by President General Ziaul Haq to oblige his batman Awal Khan who belonged to this border village.
The road has been in a dilapidated condition since long.
Awal Khan Pasedkhel was the batman of General Ziaul Haq when he served as a major in Landikotal in the early 70s. After the appointment of Gen Ziaul Haq as Chief of Army Staff, he visited Landikotal and met Awal Khan at his village.
Ziaul Haq named the border village after Awal Khan, constructed the road and provided electricity to it.
Talking to The News, Pasedkhel Welfare Committee Chairman Bashar Khan Shinwari and Vice-Chairman Sadiq Khan Shinwari said the road leading to their village had developed potholes. They said the road connected Awal Khan Killay to Landikotal and it was also the lone link road that provided access to the border with Afghanistan.
Bashar Khan said the road was badly damaged by the heavy vehicles carrying goods to Afghanistan when it was used as diversion during the repair work on the Peshawar-Torkham road.
