PESHAWAR: A two-minute 46 seconds video of Friday’s attack on Imamia Masjid, made by a worshiper, is probably the first of its kind that has covered two suicide blasts and killing of most of the people inside the hall.
The terrifying video has been circulated by thousands of people on social media, letting know the people how the entire episode happened. The video was made by one of the worshipers through his cellular phone. The filmmaker survived the attack without any harm.
There are a number of videos, including CCTV footages, of several terrorist attacks, blasts and suicide hits all over the world. However, the video of the Hayatabad attack circulated on Friday has covered firing, blasts, killing of people, their screams and the thick smoke covering the hall from within a couple of meters by the one who miraculously escaped the attack.
“I talked to the person who had made the video. He told us that he was sure he was going to die but wanted to film the incident as evidence for police investigators,” a senior police officer told The News.
Twenty-two people were killed and over 70 wounded when attackers stormed the Imamia Imambargah in Phase-5, Hayatabad during Friday prayers. The attackers opened indiscriminate fire, hurled hand grenades and then detonated explosives tied to their bodies.
In the video, one can see how people were wounded inside the hall after gunshots were fired from outside.A man can be heard shouting at others to close the door so that the attackers cannot enter the hall. As people rushed to help the wounded, more shots are fired to target the rescuers.
The video then showed one of the attackers with a Kalashnikov in his hands entering the hall while firing indiscriminately before one of the suicide bombers detonated explosives tied to his body.
One can see people crying for help after being critically wounded and others killed on the spot. The firing did not stop as another bomber exploded his jacket within 30 seconds after the first blast. The hall was filled with thick smoke. Some people were seen crying for help and others reciting verses from the holy Quran.
All those inside the hall ducked for cover to protect themselves from the explosions and firing. A couple of young men were seen rushing towards the victims amid the firing and two huge blasts that could be heard in the video clip.
Many have criticised the posting of the video of the inhuman act on Facebook, Twitter and other social forums, arguing the scenes of the bloodshed would have negative impact on those viewing it, especially children. “No words after watching the Hayatabad video. Pain, cries and drowning fear that you’ll never see your loved ones. I guess I’m gonna be sick,” said a tweet on twitter.
“There is a video online of Hayatabad attack shot during attack, which is very graphic. Plz report it. We shouldn’t traumatise our children,” posted Jibran Nasir, who recently staged protest against Maulana Abdul Aziz. “Watched 166 seconds video of the #PeshawarAttack from inside the Imamia Mosque Hayatabad. Insane. firing, blasts, cries. God, please end this,” stated another tweet.
