World help in health sector to be welcomed: minister

LAHORE :Punjab Minister for Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafiq has said that Punjab government would welcome cooperation of international institutions with regard to provision of best health facilities to the people, capacity-building of the medical staff and introduction of modern technology in the teaching hospitals.

He stated while talking to a joint delegation on Wednesday, according to a handout issued here. Gift of Life International Chief Executive Rob Raylman, PCHF CE Farhan Ahmad and other office-bearers of both institutions were included in the delegation. Institute of Child Health and Children Hospital Lahore Dean Prof Masood Sadiq was also present.

Rob Raylman said that his institution was the sister organisation of Rotary International which was providing treatment and surgical facilities to the children suffering from congenital heart diseases in 78 countries of the world. He offered the services for training and capacity-building of the doctors and nurses serving in Children Hospital as well as other hospitals in Peads Cardiology Departments. He said that health mission would be sent to Punjab from abroad for imparting training to the local doctors, and nurses would also be sent abroad from Punjab to get training as master trainers.

Rob Raylman also said that their NGO was ready to send patients with complicated heart diseases for treatment abroad. He informed the minister that Gift of Life would also provide medical equipment to the proposed children hospital to be built by Pakistan Children Heart Foundation on Ferozepur Road. 

PCHF CE Farhan Ahmad said that his foundation had so far financially sponsored 721 surgeries of children with congenital heart diseases. He said that one surgery cost Rs 0.4 million to Rs 0.5 million. He said that PCHF had planned to construct children heart hospital and research institute on Ferozepur Road for which a piece of land was already available. He said that cooperation of Punjab government would be required for the noble cause.

Institute of Child Health Dean Prof Masood Sadiq said that every year the number of children with congenital heart diseases was increasing so close cooperation of public and private institutions was essential. He disclosed that after completion of extended block of Children Hospital Lahore, the capacity for heart surgeries had been increased three times as 16 operation theatres were working in the new block and the patients were coming from all over the country to the Children Hospital.

Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq thanked the CE of Gift of Life International for extending his cooperation for training and capacity-building of the medical staff and said that Punjab government would welcome international cooperation and extend all-out support to complete the task.
