SHC orders inquiry against CTD officer over bribery charges
The Sindh High Court directed the deputy inspector general of the Counter Terrorism Department on Wednesday to conduct an investigation into allegations that a CTD officer had taken a bribe for releasing the brother of a suspect involved in the Karachi airport attack case.
The directive came during a hearing of a petition of Nadeem Patel, who alleged that CTD officer Azam Chudhary had forcibly taken Rs30 million for releasing his brother, Iqbal, who was picked up for questioning in connection with the airport terror attack that occurred in June 2014.
A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh, took exception to the act of the police officer, and observed that on the one hand, police personnel were sacrificing their lives, but on the other, black sheep in the department were minting money from citizens.
The court directed CTD DIG Amir Farooqui to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within one month. The DIG assured the court of complying with its orders.
Edhi Centre robbery
An additional district and sessions judge (South) issued a non-bailable warrant for the arrest of a man, Javed Akhtar, who is alleged to have committed a robbery at the Edhi Centre.
The court ordered that the accused be brought to the next hearing on April 8. Akhtar, along with some other men, had looted around Rs150 million from the Edhi Centre in the Kharadar police limits in 2014.
