Suicide jacket recovered from Multan canal

MULTAN: A fully charged suicide jacket was accidentally recovered on Tuesday from the Multan branch canal (Naubahar Canal) when canal water level dropped, police said.
A caller Hamza informed the police about the suicide jacket. Police arrested him and shifted him to an undisclosed destination. He told the police that a bearded man had thrown the jacket into the canal.
DSP Maqbool Jatt told The News the police had launched a crackdown and house-to-house search and someone had thrown the jacket to escape the police crackdown. He said the suicide jacket was thrown into the canal water not more than 48 hours and four packets of explosives were found from it. District Civil Defence officer and in-charge bomb disposal section Tariq Waheed said it was an active suicide jacket carrying five kilograms explosives.
Multan Zone Irrigation chief engineer Inayat Cheema said the Naubahar Canal starts at Rango bridge between Kabirwala, Multan and passes through urban and rural areas to Multan Southern Bypass and finally falls into the river Chenab. Security sources disclosed that people in the areas across the canal were linked to Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
