Rs 6.5m scam unearthed in IUB
From Ameen Abbasi
BAHAWALPUR: A scam of Rs 6.5 million has been unearthed in the Islamia University Bahawalpur and the IUB Treasurer Branch Account Section has launched a probe into the matter.
Sources revealed that in mid of last year a fictitious account was opened in HBL IUB Branch in the name of Zohra Bibi and all cheques of the said amount were transferred into her account. They added that the transferred amount had been withdrawn through ATMs as well as cheques. They said that the scam amount could further increase.
They said that the IUB Treasurer Department had been run by temporary deputy treasurer for the last six years. “During this period, every incumbent vice-chancellor made political recruitments in the Treasurer Department, ignoring the merit. Such political and favourite appointees are blaming each others,” they revealed. They added that senior officials were holding recently-recruited Junior Clerk Rizwan and politically-appointed Assistant Treasurer Saba Ali, daughter of PML-N former MPA Haji Zulfiqar Ali, responsible for the scam. They said that the fraud was committed in collaboration with the bank staffers. When contacted, IUB Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Hashmi said that he could not give details about the scam as they were probing the matter to unearth details and trace the culprits.
