Flood-affected people to get units of Turkish Housing Scheme in Thatta

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that houses and units of the Turkish Housing Scheme constructed in Thatta will be allotted to flood-affected people of Thatta and Sujawal.

He was presiding over a meeting on the Turkish Housing Scheme in Thatta constructed with the support of the Turkish government. The housing scheme has 2,120 housing units; each unit has two rooms, a kitchen, bathroom, courtyard and veranda, according to a statement on Monday. 

There are two schools with 32 class rooms for primary and secondary boys’ and girls’ schools. It has a commercial centre with 12 shops, three mosques, two community centres, one health centre and a sports complex.

The chief minister directed Hyderabad Commissioner Qazi Shahid Parvez, Sindh DG Disaster Management Authority Salman Shah and others to hand over schools to a well-reputed organisation through education foundations to provide quality education to the children of flood-affected people.

Talking about handing over of health centre, he directed the commissioner to give it to the People's Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) so that it could provide quality health services.

The chief minister was told that water supply and drainage system of the housing scheme had been completed. Regarding the electricity, he was told electrification had been completed and only meters were yet to be installed.

Approving the criteria for allotment for housing units, Syed Murad Ali shah said the permanent or present address of nominee must be of district Thatta and Sujawal in the CNIC. He said the nominee should be a beneficiary of CDCP-II (Watan Card Phase-II) with household damaged category.

He said the applicant must falls under the national poverty score card of the Benazir Income Support Programme and has not been provided a shelter or help for shelter by any government agency, NGO or INGO. Regarding shops, it was decided that there would be an open auction.

There are 36,069 flood affected households, including 13,622 in Thatta and 22,447 in Sujawal. Therefore, the chief minister directed the district administration of Thatta and Sujawal to provide the list of those who had already been provided shelter by the government, any NGO under various relief and rehabilitation programmes.

The Hyderabad commissioner said that 35,284 were eligible beneficiaries for balloting. The lists of the eligible candidates were displayed at the offices of the district commissioner and the PDMA office.

A public notice was accordingly published in May in local and national newspapers inviting objections from those who would think that they were left out despite falling within the eligibility criteria.
