Dealers imparted importance of iodised salt

OKARA: The proper use of iodised salt is very useful in controlling pre-natal mental deformity, dead birth, abortion, goiter, low IQ level, dumbness, deafness, slanting-sight, by birth dwarfishness and incapability to bear offspring.

Imparting training to district salt dealers about how they must mix Potassium Iodate (KIO3) while grinding edible salt for sale, Dr Tariq Mehmood said the mixing iodine in the edible salt was very easy, cheap and adoptable. He said rock salt is of four kinds such as red salt, white salt, glossy salt and pink salt.

Muhammad Atif and Iqbal Mehmood of an NGO and local health official, respectively, also spoke.

They said only pinky rock salt was well edible and the other three kinds must be avoided.

They said one kg salt needed just 6 drops of iodine solution and one kg iodine was sufficient for 20 tons of salt.

They said in developed societies the salt dealers are bound to prepare iodised salt for human use, where sale of iodine-less salt is a crime.

They said iodine for Pakistan was brought from the hills of Chili. The dealers were also offered to get free accessories for salt-iodine mixing.
