Nawabshah short of over 45,000 police personnel, seminar told
NAWABSHAH: Fifty-thousand personnel are required to police the district, but the affairs are being run with 3,000 policemen only.
This was stated by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tanveer Hussain Tunio, while addressing a seminar on “Sacrifices of police despite dangers” organized by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University.
He said that shortage of police personnel, inadequate training and low supply of ammunition were the main hurdles in police performance. SSP Tunio said that a policeman who was issued a rifle and 20 rounds could not fight with a gang of bandits. “But despite that,” the SSP said, “we salute the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation and country.”
Applauding the services of the traffic police, the SSP said that they discharged their duties under the sun for 12 hours without any break. Responding to the questions by the students, SSP Tunio said that large numbers of complaints poured in regarding inflated electric bills, land grabbing, currency business, frauds and misappropriation of money.
He disclosed that officials of other departments showed reluctance in facing the public while on the contrary the police remained alert round the clock. SSP Tunio said that a few days back the Station House Officer and all the 73 staff members of the A-Section Police Station were removed on some public complaints.
He said that the police were performing well, but improvement in their working was still needed. He appealed to the people to cooperate with the police and inform them about crime in their areas in time.
DIG of Police, Farhat Ali Junejo, told the seminar that the working of the police in this district was commendable despite unfavourable conditions. He said that the police through their efficiency were making history. The students of the university were also shown some videos on how the police functioned. The Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Arshad Saleem, also addressed the seminar.
