UAF VC concerned at decreasing agriculture land

FAISALABAD: Quality education and researches providing tangible solution to the problems are prerequisite for development of any country, said University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan.
Chairing a meeting of the Graduate Studies Research Board at the Syndicate Room on Tuesday, he said that strong academia-industry linkages would pave the way to address the issues of food insecurity, poverty and health sector. He urged the researchers to come up with out-of-the-box solutions to problems of the general public and farmers. He said that the university was making all-out efforts to provide quality education to the students. He said that the UAF was the only institution ranked among the top 100 varsities of the globe in any category. The university students’ current enrollment had surpassed 23,000 whereas it was offering 165 degree programmes with special focus on agriculture and rural development, he added. The vice-chancellor: “The agriculture is the backbone of our country which is contributing 21 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product.” He expressed his concern that agriculture land was decreasing at a large pace whereas the rural population was moving towards urban areas. He added that the farmers’ sons did not want to become a farmer. He said that fees at the UAF sub-campuses were comparatively low as compared to the main campus in order to promote education in the under privileged areas. Registrar Muhammad Hussain, Director Graduate Studies Dr Haq Nawaz and others attended the meeting.
Man kills son insisting for second marriage

FAISALABAD: A man allegedly killed his son over a marriage issue at Chak 94/JB, Gojra, on Tuesday.
Naveed Irshad, a married man, wanted to contract second marriage with a village girl but his father Irshad Ahmad was against it. On the day of the incident, Irshad Ahmad and his son Naveed quarreled with each other over the issue. In a fit of frustration, Irshad Ahmad allegedly shot his son Naveed dead.
Three awarded 50-year jail in abduction for ransom case

FAISALABAD: Anti-Terrorism Court Special Judge Raja Pervaiz Akhtar on Tuesday convicted three accused in an abduction for ransom case.
The judge awarded 50-year imprisonment each to M Nawaz, Ali Raza and Ahmad Raza. The court also ordered confiscation of their properties. The judge, however, acquitted two other accused Komal Bibi and Yasmin Bibi, giving them the benefit of the doubt. According to the prosecution, the convicts had abducted Abdul Azeem for ransom.
